So you know what it feels like: the good pain of muscles getting stronger. You know how it feels the next morning to walk down a flight of steps after a long run - your legs hurting in a good way from getting stronger.

Because you joined the Run4Refugees Challenge, you’re doing more than building up your own body; you’re providing strength for refugees. Many are struggling through life situations that require massive amounts of endurance, and they need all the physical/emotional/financial strength they can get to survive these impossibly long journeys!

Here’s one way your endurance builds others up. Let me virtually introduce you to Kabura. Kabura and his family fled Burundi as refugees five years ago because the country was in deadly turmoil. They eventually found the Nyarugusu Refugee Camp in Tanzania, where they’ve been staying until it’s safe to return home.

Everything at the camp was built to be temporary – food, water, housing, education, health care – but everyone works hard to make it feel like a healthy place to be. With the help of people like you (who are also working hard to make this world healthier), we were recently able to start a community garden for refugees at the camp. And you can imagine how quickly Kabura jumped at the opportunity to participate.

Now he’s growing vegetables like eggplants and cabbages. In fact, he’s grown enough for his family and neighbors, and the family is able to sell the extra harvest for income. He expects a similar, if not better, harvest in the months ahead. “I’m really grateful for the Tanzanian government for allowing us in their country, and to Church World Service for the support in the vegetable farming project,” he said.
